Scott Barman is a Vice Chair Professor at the Medical College of Georgia, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. He also serves as Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs and Admissions at the Medical College of Georgia and Co-Director of the Vascular Biology Center.
- Ph.D. in Physiology from University of North Dakota (1986)
- M.S. in Physiology from University of North Dakota (1983)
- B.S. in Natural Sciences from Muhlenberg College (1980)
Dr. Barman's research focuses on vascular biology and pathophysiology, particularly in pulmonary hypertension, endothelial barrier regulation, and diabetes-related vascular complications. His work explores molecular mechanisms like Cav-1 function, Galectin-3 signaling, and purine metabolism in cardiovascular disease contexts.
Recent publications highlight his contributions to understanding pulmonary hypertension progression via purine synthesis suppression, retinal microvascular differences in diabetic populations, pneumolysin-induced endothelial dysfunction, and Galectin-3's role in vascular fibrosis. His 2022 oral lesion imaging study demonstrates interdisciplinary applications of biomedical data integration.
As Co-Director of the Vascular Biology Center, Dr. Barman leads collaborative research initiatives while maintaining active academic roles in medical education and graduate-level pharmacology seminars.
