Scott B. Armen

Scott B. Armen, MD is the Charlene J. Smith Professor of Surgery and Neurosurgery, Vice-Chair of the Department of Surgery for Patient Safety and Quality, and Chief of the Division of Trauma, Acute Care and Critical Care Surgery at Penn State College of Medicine. He also serves as the Adult Level 1 Trauma Program Medical Director and Surgical Director of Quality and Patient Safety for Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center.

Dr. Armen's research focuses on trauma surgery, surgical critical care, and combat casualty care. His specific interests include thoracic and vascular trauma, shock resuscitation, sepsis, combat casualty care, and surgical quality improvement. His work spans both civilian and military trauma settings, with significant contributions to geriatric trauma, traumatic brain injury, and hemorrhage control.

His recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate continued focus on geriatric trauma outcomes, military-civilian trauma system integration, blood product utilization in trauma, and combat casualty care. These works reflect his dual expertise in academic trauma surgery and military medicine.

As a Colonel in the US Army Reserve, Dr. Armen serves as the US Army Reserve General Surgery Consultant to The Army Surgeon General and Chief Surgeon of the 629th Forward Resuscitative Surgical Detachment. His five combat deployments include service in Syria, Afghanistan (twice), and Iraq (twice), where he served in various surgical leadership roles.
