Scott A. Kuhl is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at Michigan Technological University, with an affiliated appointment as an Associate Professor in Psychology and Human Factors. He holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Utah (2009) and undergraduate degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics from Augsburg University. His research focuses on computer graphics, immersive virtual environments, head-mounted displays (HMDs), and human spatial perception, with an emphasis on improving VR technologies for practical applications.
He leads the Husky Game Development Enterprise (HGD), where students create games for business, education, and entertainment, releasing titles on platforms like itch.io. He advises on curriculum development for robotics and automation education, emphasizing open-source tools and industry collaboration. His work is supported by grants such as the NSF-funded Immersive Visualization Studio (CNS-1229297).
Dr. Kuhl’s labs include the Immersive Visualization Studio (50-megapixel display with Vicon tracking) and the Virtual Environment Lab (WorldViz PPT tracking, NVIS nVisor ST HMD). He has received awards including the Best Full Paper at VRST 2009 and the Best ATMAE Conference Proceedings Paper in 2016. His research spans human perception in VR, HMD design, and interdisciplinary education.
Grants and collaborations include partnerships with industry and academic institutions to enhance robotics education and VR technology. He mentors students in game development, virtual reality research, and perceptual studies, fostering a dynamic research and educational environment at Michigan Tech.
