Scott A. Holmstrom is a Professor and Chair of Physics & Engineering Physics at the University of Tulsa's College of Engineering & Natural Sciences. His research focuses on light-matter interactions, optics, and waveguide technologies with applications in spectroscopy and sensing. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical Sciences from the Australian National University, an M.S. in Physics from Oklahoma State University, and a B.S. in Physics from Southwest Missouri State University. Holmstrom has pioneered work in integrated photonic systems, thermal emission engineering, and chemical sensing technologies.
His expertise spans optical spectroscopy, nanophotonics, and photonics component design. Notable contributions include developing waveguide-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for trace gas detection and creating broadband thermal emission systems using micromachined waveguides. Holmstrom’s research bridges fundamental physics with applied technologies like environmental monitoring and materials science.
Recent work emphasizes ultrabroadband photonic filters and chemical sensors fabricated via photonic integrated circuit foundries. His publications highlight innovations in photonics design, thermal engineering, and sensor miniaturization. Holmstrom’s academic leadership includes teaching over two dozen physics courses and promoting innovation through TU’s acquisition of Fab Lab Tulsa.
