Schuyler Laparle

Dr. Schuyler Laparle is a Lecturer in the Department of Communication and Cognition at Tilburg University. Her research examines language as an embodied system, focusing on gesture in cooperative conversation and metaphor usage in social discourses including healthcare and climate change.

Current projects investigate the impact of invasion metaphors in oncology, ecology, and immigration. Her dissertation 'The Shape of Discourse: How gesture structures conversation' explores gesture-dialogue interfaces using formal discourse models.

Laparle holds a PhD in Linguistics from UC Berkeley and an MA from the University of Edinburgh, employing theory-open approaches across pragmatics, syntax, and sociolinguistics.
