Scarlet Shell is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology & Biotechnology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), with an affiliated appointment in Bioinformatics & Computational Biology. Her research focuses on unraveling the regulatory mechanisms behind mycobacterial stress tolerance, integrating genetics, genomics, transcriptomics, and biochemistry to address challenges in tuberculosis and antibiotic resistance.
Education:
- BA, Biological Sciences, Smith College (2001)
- PhD, Biomedical Sciences, University of California, San Diego (2008)
- Postdoctoral Training, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
Research Interests: Professor Shell’s lab investigates how mycobacteria adapt to stress through RNA processing and degradation, transcriptional regulation, and antibiotic discovery. Her work explores the interplay between gene expression and stress survival, with implications for human health and infectious disease.
Article Trends: Her recent publications highlight RNA degradation pathways, small RNA regulation, and natural product-based therapies for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Key themes include transcriptome dynamics, metabolic coupling to RNA stability, and RNA-binding proteins in stress adaptation.
Scientific Honors:
- WPI Board of Trustees Award for Outstanding Advising (2019)
- Sigma Xi Outstanding Research and Scholarship Award (2020)
- NSF CAREER grant (2017-2022)
- Chair, Mechanisms of Microbial Transcription GRC (2025)
Advising & Grants: She mentors a dynamic team of PhD, Master’s, and undergraduate researchers, supported by NIH grants (NIAID P01 AI143575-01A1, R21 AI151481-01, R21 AI156415-01A1) and NSF funding.
Labs & Collaborations: The Shell Lab at WPI is a multidisciplinary hub collaborating with institutions like Harvard Medical School, UMass Medical School, and the University of California, Davis. Her work aligns with the Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health & Well-Being) and emphasizes student-led discovery in courses like Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering.
