Dr. Savannah Thais is an Associate Research Scientist at Columbia University's Data Science Institute (DSI), specializing in machine learning and its societal implications. She holds affiliations with the Data, Media and Society Initiative, Foundations of Data Science Program, Computational Social Science Committee, and Smart Cities Initiative. Her research bridges high-energy physics methodologies with AI ethics, focusing on measurement design principles like uncertainty quantification and experimental blinding. Key areas include geometric deep learning, physics-informed AI models, technology regulation, and equitable data practices.
Dr. Thais earned her PhD in Physics from Yale University (2019) and completed postdoctoral research at Princeton University (2019–2022). She leads Community Insight and Impact, a nonprofit addressing data-driven resource allocation for vulnerable communities. Active in professional organizations, she serves on the Executive Board of Women in Machine Learning and the APS Group on Data Science, while co-editing Springer's AI Ethics journal.
Her work emphasizes societal impacts of AI, including workplace equity, climate ethics, and educational access. Recent publications explore algorithmic accountability, generative AI regulation, and interdisciplinary applications of graph neural networks in physics and social systems. She advocates for technology development rooted in community needs and equitable data practices.
