Her work integrates translanguaging pedagogies, participatory research methodologies, and critical sociolinguistics to reimagine language education systems. Recent projects explore spoken-word poetry as empowerment, posthumanist approaches to school gardens, and systemic reform in multilingual education policy.
Key grants include a 2017-2021 SSHRC Insight Grant on refugee youth literacy, a 2019-2022 grant on multilingual assessment, and a 2021-2024 study on university multilingual teaching strategies. She advocates for intentional engagement with students' linguistic repertoires across educational levels.
Dr. Van Viegen's scholarship bridges theory and practice through collaborative partnerships with schools, districts, and policymakers, emphasizing participatory approaches to research and systemic change in education.
