Sasha de Vogel serves as a Post-Doctoral Researcher and Associate Director at the Authoritarian Politics Lab, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, specializing in authoritarian governance and political dynamics across Russia and the post-Soviet region.
She holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Michigan, complemented by an MA in Russian, Eastern European and Eurasian Regional Studies and a BA in Slavic Studies from Columbia University. Previous research appointments include post-doctoral fellowships at New York University's Jordan Center for the Advanced Study of Russia and Harvard University's Weatherhead Center for International Affairs.
Her research analyzes autocratic regime responses to societal demands, focusing on strategic use of repression and concessions during protests, policy change mechanisms, and the operation of citizen grievance channels within non-democratic systems. She also investigates domestic political factors influencing Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Supported by the National Science Foundation and Carnegie Corporation/Harriman Institute, Dr. de Vogel provides expert analysis to U.S. government agencies, international media, and NGOs, and has served as an expert witness in asylum cases.
