
Sari Altschuler

Sari Altschuler is an Associate Professor of English and Founding Director of the Health, Humanities, and Society Program at Northeastern University's College of Social Sciences and Humanities. Her work bridges American literature (pre-1865), medical humanities, disability studies, and health humanities. She holds a PhD from the City University of New York (2012).
Her research focuses on intersections of medicine, disability, and literary culture in early America. Key publications include The Medical Imagination: Literature and Health in the Early United States (2018) and co-edited Keywords for Health Humanities (2023). Awards include recognition from the Society of Early Americanists, Disability History Association, and grants from Mellon Foundation and McNeil Center for Early American Studies.
Altschuler previously taught at Emory University and served as a faculty fellow at Wellesley College and invited professor at Université de Paris. She directs the Touch This Page! exhibition exploring multisensory reading experiences and chairs Harvard's Critical Health Humanities seminar.
Her articles address topics like AI scribes in healthcare (2024), post-pandemic pain narratives (2024), and antebellum disability representation (2023). Grants include long-term support from American Antiquarian Society and Wellesley's Newhouse Center for the Humanities.
