Saravanan R. is a Professor and Department Head at Texas A&M University's College of Geosciences. His research focuses on climate variability and predictability, coupled ocean-atmosphere dynamics, and climate modeling. He holds a Ph.D. in Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences from Princeton University (1990), an M.Sc. in Physics from IIT Kanpur (1986), and completed postdoctoral research at the University of Cambridge (1990–1993).
His research explores phenomena like tropical cyclones, midlatitude storms, and low-frequency climate modes. Recent work examines the influence of El Niño, mesoscale ocean eddies, and machine learning applications in climate analysis. He has contributed to improving weather and climate prediction through coupled model simulations and data analysis.
Key awards include the 2015 College of Geosciences Distinguished Research Award. Saravanan has served on committees such as the Prediction and Research Moored Array in the Atlantic (PIRATA) Science Steering Committee and the American Meteorological Society’s Climate Variability and Change Committee. He previously edited the Journal of Climate (2007–2010).
His work bridges theoretical, computational, and observational approaches, addressing critical climate questions such as ocean-atmosphere interactions and anthropogenic impacts on weather patterns.
