Sarah W. Davies is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Boston University. Her research focuses on ecological genomics, population genetics, and coral ecology, with a particular emphasis on understanding how corals and their symbiotic partners respond to climate change. She leads the Davies Marine Population Genomics Lab, established in 2017, which investigates the mechanisms underlying coral adaptation, acclimation, and dispersal in the face of rapid environmental shifts. Her work integrates eco-physiological experiments with genomic data to predict symbiosis outcomes under climate stressors.
Dr. Davies holds a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin and has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications. Her research has been recognized with awards such as the 2020 Coral Reef Hero status from Environment, Coastal and Offshore (ECO) magazine. She actively collaborates with international teams to advance coral conservation strategies, including proactive assisted gene flow and selective breeding approaches.
Her lab’s key projects include studying cryptic coral diversity, microbial symbiont dynamics, and the genetic basis of thermal tolerance. Recent work highlights the importance of cryptic lineages in maintaining coral resilience and the role of diel thermal variability in symbiotic stability. Dr. Davies also advocates for equitable academic practices, co-authoring papers on dismantling discriminatory reward systems in science.
Current lab members include PhD students and postdocs working on coral genomics, symbiosis, and environmental stress responses. Notable collaborations involve institutions like the University of Texas, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, and international reef conservation networks.
