معرفی
Sarah Volkman is a Professor of Nursing at Simmons University with expertise in pathophysiology, human disease processes, and malaria research. She has been involved in preparing nursing students in basic science content since 1989 and teaches Advanced Human Pathophysiology for graduate nursing students in both the Nursing@Simmons online program and on campus. Her role combines academic instruction with significant contributions to malaria research on a global scale.
Education:
- ScD, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health
- BA, University of California, San Diego
Sarah Volkman's research focuses on malaria population genetics and drug resistance. She is an international expert on malaria and collaborates with the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Her work integrates molecular biology, genomics, and epidemiology to understand malaria transmission patterns, drug resistance mechanisms, and parasite population dynamics across different geographic regions. She has made significant contributions to the development of genomic surveillance methods for tracking malaria parasites and understanding the genetic basis of drug resistance.
Her recent publications (2020-2024) demonstrate a sustained focus on genomic surveillance of Plasmodium falciparum, with particular attention to Senegal and other malaria-endemic regions. Her research examines drug resistance mutations, parasite relatedness, transmission dynamics, and the impact of malaria control programs. Many of her studies employ advanced genomic techniques to track malaria parasite populations and understand the genetic mechanisms underlying drug resistance, contributing significantly to the global effort toward malaria eradication.
Scientific Awards:
- Scholarly Excellence Award, Simmons University (2007)
- Excellence in Teaching Award, Simmons University (2010)
- Christensen Fellow, Harvard University (2000)
- Senior Teaching Fellow, Bok Center for Teaching and Learning, Harvard University (1998)
- Young Investigator, American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (1994)
Sarah Volkman is actively engaged in community outreach through Nursing Students Without Borders and Science Education in Schools. Her research has been supported by collaborations with major public health organizations including the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She has contributed significantly to the field of malaria genomics, particularly in understanding drug resistance mechanisms and transmission patterns. Her work involves extensive genomic surveillance of malaria parasites across multiple countries, with a particular focus on Senegal, providing critical data for malaria control programs and helping inform strategies for malaria elimination.
