Sarah Shortall is an Associate Professor at the University of Notre Dame, specializing in modern European intellectual and cultural history. Her work focuses on France, Catholic thought, and the interplay between religion and politics. She earned her Ph.D. from Harvard University and previously held a Junior Research Fellowship at Oxford University.
Her research explores themes such as secularization, decolonization, and the global circulation of religious ideas. Key publications include Soldiers of God in a Secular World (2021), which won major awards, and a co-edited volume on Christianity and human rights (2020). Current projects examine 'Planetary Catholicism,' analyzing global religious visions post-1945.
Shortall teaches courses on French history, Catholicism, and European intellectual history. Her work appears in journals like Past & Present and Modern Intellectual History, blending historical analysis with interdisciplinary perspectives on theology, ecology, and international law.
