Sarah O'Malley is an Assistant Professor in the Corning School of Ocean Studies at Maine Maritime Academy, where she has served full-time since 2008 after joining as adjunct faculty in 2004. She teaches General Biology, Coastal Natural History, Introduction to Ocean Science, and advises senior research projects for Ocean Studies majors.
Education:
- B.S. in Natural Resources, University of Maine
- M.Ed. in Science and Environmental Education, University of Maine
Her research centers on intertidal and estuarine ecosystems, with fieldwork spanning Acadia National Park's rocky intertidal zones, Bagaduce River soft-shell clam fisheries, and river herring restoration projects. She integrates community stakeholders—including clammers, fisheries biologists, and land trusts—into long-term biodiversity monitoring and sustainability initiatives.
As a dedicated science communicator, Dr. O'Malley produces a weekly nature radio show, leads public intertidal walks, and co-authors the Maine-based guidebook Life Between the Tides. She also co-founded MMA's interdisciplinary Environmental Sustainability minor, which graduated its first cohort in 2019.
