Sarah Nickel is an Associate Professor in the Department of History, Classics, and Religion at the University of Alberta. She holds a PhD from Simon Fraser University and is a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Indigenous Politics and Gender. Her research focuses on Indigenous histories, gender, political movements, and community-engaged methodologies. She is Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc, French Canadian, and Ukrainian, with roots in unceded Indigenous territories.
Dr. Nickel’s academic journey includes prior positions at the University of Saskatchewan’s Department of Indigenous Studies. Her work interrogates Indigenous political formations, gender dynamics, and decolonial frameworks. Key publications include Assembling Unity: Indigenous Politics, Gender, and the Union of BC Indian Chiefs (2019), which won the CHA Best Book in Indigenous History Prize, and co-edited volumes on Indigenous feminisms.

Her research emphasizes Indigenous women’s leadership in political movements, challenging colonial narratives through oral histories and community partnerships. Current projects explore Secwépemc histories and Indigenous child welfare advocacy. Dr. Nickel actively mentors graduate students in Indigenous studies and historical methodologies.
