Sarah Moss is the William Wilhartz Professor of Philosophy and Professor of Law by courtesy at the University of Michigan. Her expertise spans epistemology, philosophy of language, formal semantics, and legal philosophy. She holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy with a minor in Linguistics from MIT (2009), a B.Phil. in Philosophy from Oxford University (2004), and an A.B. in Mathematics from Harvard University (2002).
Her research bridges epistemology and language, addressing topics like probabilistic knowledge, pragmatic encroachment, and legal standards of proof. Her book Probabilistic Knowledge (OUP, 2018) argues that probabilistic beliefs can constitute knowledge, challenging traditional theories and addressing social/political issues like racial profiling. Recent work includes A Synthesis View of Counterfactuals (2024) and How to Do Without Encroachment (2024), advancing debates in epistemology and legal philosophy.
Awards include the Sanders Epistemology Prize (2019), APA Article Prize (2022), and Sanders Book Prize (2020). She teaches advanced courses on analytic philosophy, formal methods, and legal epistemology. Her research is supported by grants from the University of Michigan and the William Wilhartz Chair.
