Dr. Sarah Lane is a Lecturer in Behaviour and Evolution at the School of Biological and Marine Sciences, University of Plymouth, and currently serves as the Employability Lead for the School. Her research focuses on animal behavior, evolutionary biology, and contest dynamics in marine and terrestrial species. She has supervised multiple postgraduate students investigating topics such as parental care strategies in sea anemones, morphological trade-offs in beetles, and the impact of environmental stressors on animal behavior.
Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to life below water and sustainable ecosystems. Notable research areas include weapon evolution in animals, microplastic impacts on marine organisms, and decision-making processes in contests. She has published extensively on topics ranging from optimal foraging theory to the behavioral ecology of hermit crabs and dormice.
Students supervised include Liz Miles (PhD, sea anemone speciation), Amy Bromley (ResM, beetle parental care), and Amelia Clifford (PhD, sentience in cnidarians). Her research highlights the interplay between environmental challenges and organismal behavior, with implications for conservation and evolutionary theory.
