Sarah K. Hussain, MD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine, Division of Cardiology at Penn State College of Medicine and serves as the Program Director for the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship. She is affiliated with the Penn State Heart and Vascular Institute and provides clinical care at Penn State Health Medical Group locations in Harrisburg and Palmyra, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Hussain completed her medical education at Aga Khan Medical College in Karachi, Pakistan in 2004, followed by Internal Medicine residency at Cleveland Clinic Foundation in 2009, and Cardiovascular Disease and Electrophysiology fellowships at University of Virginia School of Medicine in 2012 and 2014 respectively.
Her research focuses on cardiac electrophysiology with expertise in atrial fibrillation management, ablation techniques, and cardiac device therapy. She has conducted comparative studies of ablation technologies, investigated left atrial anatomy in relation to ablation procedures, evaluated antiarrhythmic drug therapies including dofetilide, and explored novel techniques for leadless pacemaker implantation in complex anatomical situations such as through inferior vena cava filters and across bioprosthetic tricuspid valves.
Her recent publications demonstrate a consistent focus on advancing electrophysiology practice through clinical research, with key themes including optimizing atrial fibrillation treatment strategies and expanding applications of leadless pacemaker technology. Her research often takes the form of multicenter clinical studies that provide valuable real-world evidence for the electrophysiology community.
As Program Director of the Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship, Dr. Hussain trains the next generation of cardiac electrophysiologists. Her clinical practice encompasses the full spectrum of cardiac arrhythmia management including arrhythmia evaluation, cardiac ablations, pacemaker and defibrillator implantation, atrial fibrillation treatment, and left atrial appendage closure procedures. She has received high patient satisfaction ratings with 4.9 out of 5 from 413 patient surveys.
