Sarah Gerken is Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at University of Alaska Anchorage, specializing in crustacean systematics with emphasis on Cumacea taxonomy. She holds a Ph.D. in Oceanography from University of Maine (2000), M.S. in Marine Science from UC Santa Cruz (1995), and B.A. in Marine Biology from UC Santa Cruz (1992).
Research expertise includes:
- Cumacean taxonomy and systematics
- Deep-sea and polar crustacean biodiversity
- Phylogenetic relationships within Peracarida
- Morphological diagnostics of marine invertebrates
Dr. Gerken has described over 40 new crustacean species across 40+ publications, including monographs on New Zealand and Australian fauna. Her work contributes to global biodiversity assessments and marine biogeographic patterns. Articles frequently involve international collaborations and museum collection studies.
She maintains research focus on Diastylidae and Leuconidae families, with field work spanning Arctic, Antarctic, and Pacific Ocean habitats. Teaching includes marine biology and taxonomy courses.
