Professor Dr. Sarah Gaubitz serves as a Professor for the Didactics of Social Studies at the Institute for Primary School Didactics & General Education within the School of Educational and Social Sciences at the University of Hildesheim. She returned to her alma mater on October 1, 2024, after previously completing her teacher education studies there in 1999 and working for many years as a primary school teacher followed by academic positions at the University of Osnabrück, University of Siegen, and institutions in Ludwigsburg and Erfurt.
Her research focuses on how to design teaching that fosters children's joy in learning, curiosity about the world, and critical thinking skills. Professor Gaubitz specializes in Education for Sustainable Development and Media Education, with particular interest in how teachers implement sustainability concepts in primary school social studies and how children conceptualize sustainability issues. She also investigates the potential and challenges of children creating explanatory videos for their peers within social studies education.
She teaches multiple courses in the Summer 2025 semester including Teaching and Learning in Social Studies, Research and Evaluation Methods in Social Sciences, Dimensions of General Education, and Practical Blocks in General Studies. Her work exemplifies the Hildesheim Model of teacher education that emphasizes the close integration of theory and practice, with students observing in schools from their first semester.
Professor Gaubitz maintains regular office hours on Thursdays from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in room HC.J.2.05, requiring prior registration through Moddle. She is an active member of the Permanent Senate Commission for Teaching (SKoLA) and serves as a Reserve Delegate to the Faculty Council FB 1.
