Sarah Garland is an Associate Professor in American Literature & Visual Culture at the University of East Anglia (UEA), affiliated with the School of Politics, Philosophy and Area Studies. She holds roles such as Research Director for the School of Art, Media and American Studies, and chairs the American Studies Steering Committee. Her interdisciplinary work bridges literature and visual arts, focusing on modernist American studies (1910–1970), experimental forms, and everyday aesthetics like dress and design.

Research: Explores inter-arts forms, embodied cognition in word-image interactions, and the role of 'lifestyle' aesthetics. Her book Mixed Messages with Catherine Gander examines verbal-visual practices. Current projects include The White Box, analyzing Roland Barthes' Death of the Author through avant-garde media.

Teaching & Grants: Supervises PhDs in American literature and interdisciplinary studies. Led the British Academy-funded project BA Researcher at Risk (2022–2026) on Ukrainian refugee families. Taught courses like American Word and Image and Modernism over 20 years.
Labs/Teams: Co-ordinates CreativeUEA and collaborates with Temple University via AMS teaching partnerships.
