Dr. Sarah Emel is a faculty member at the Department of Biology, Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She specializes in Conservation and Landscape Genomics, focusing on eco-evolutionary dynamics of species' responses to human habitat alteration and using this knowledge for improved conservation management.
- Education: BA from Dartmouth College (2006), MS from University of Tulsa (2009), PhD from Washington State University (2015).
Her research integrates population genetic theory, spatial statistical approaches, and genomic/GIS datasets to study the impact of landscape and climate variables on species. She works with non-model organisms, including amphibians, fish, mammals, and plants. Key areas include genetic differentiation, landscape ecology, and climate change adaptation.
Recent publications emphasize landscape genetics, population structure, and genetic connectivity in species like native grassland plants and torrent salamanders. Her work explores how urbanization, agriculture, and climate change affect genetic diversity and species boundaries.
Dr. Emel teaches courses such as BIOL 201 – Principles of Ecology and Evolution, BIOL 202 – Principles of Cell and Molecular Biology, and BIOL 460/660 – Conservation Genetics.
