Sarah Elizabeth Worthington is the Downing Professor of the Laws of England at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge. She holds concurrent roles as an Academic Member at 3/4 South Square, Gray’s Inn, and serves on multiple international councils and boards, including the British Academy Council, AHRC Council, and the Society of Legal Scholars (SLS). Her academic career includes prior positions as Professor and Head of the Department of Law at the London School of Economics (2003–2011), and she has held visiting professorships at institutions like the University of Hong Kong and the University of Melbourne.
She holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge (1995), an LLM from the University of Melbourne (1990), and an LLB (First Class) from the University of Queensland (1986). Her research focuses on company law, finance, bankruptcy, commercial transactions, and equity. Notable honors include Fellow of the British Academy (2009), QC (Honoris Causa) (2010), and the Francqui Chair (2009–2010).
Her professional activities span legal practice, academia, and governance. She has served on advisory boards for institutions such as the Cambridge Centre for Business Research and the Asian Institute of International Financial Law. Her roles in legal education include leadership in the SLS and contributions to legal reform through projects like the ‘Directorship of the Future’ initiative.
