Sarah Elizabeth Schellhorn

Sarah Elizabeth Schellhorn, MD, is an Associate Professor of Medicine (Medical Oncology) at Yale School of Medicine and serves as Chief Ambulatory Officer of Smilow Cancer Hospital. She is also the Regional Service Line Medical Director for the Central Shoreline Region at Smilow Cancer Hospital. Her clinical practice focuses on breast cancer treatment, and she is actively involved in education of students, residents, and fellows at Yale.

Dr. Schellhorn's research interests span breast cancer treatment adherence, healthcare policy, women's health, and elderly cancer care. She leads the Breast Cancer Endocrine Therapy Adherence (BETA) study, which uses digital interventions to improve treatment compliance. Her recent publications (2020-2024) demonstrate a strong focus on breast cancer outcomes research, treatment patterns, and healthcare delivery. Her work often examines age-related biases in treatment decisions, medication adherence strategies, and the real-world effectiveness of breast cancer therapies.

Dr. Schellhorn has received multiple teaching awards including the David S. Fischer MD Annual Teaching Award (2016, 2019) and has been recognized for clinical excellence with the Clifton Howe Award (2011). She actively mentors postdoctoral fellows and serves on numerous hospital committees including the Smilow Access Committee and Central Shoreline Planning Committee.

Her current research portfolio includes several clinical trials as Principal or Sub-Investigator, with a particular emphasis on optimizing breast cancer treatment through biomarker-guided approaches and improving patient monitoring strategies. She is deeply involved with the COPPER Center (Cancer Outcomes, Public Policy, and Effectiveness Research) at Yale School of Medicine, where she contributes to health policy research in oncology.
