Sarah Duff is an Associate Professor of History at Colby College in Maine. Her research focuses on the histories of age, gender, and colonialism in South Africa and the British Empire. Duff holds a PhD in Modern History from Birkbeck, University of London, an MSc in Women’s Health from University College London, and advanced degrees from Stellenbosch University. She has held prestigious fellowships, including the Mellon New Directions Fellowship and a National Research Foundation Career Advancement Fellowship.
Her key works include Childhood and Youth in African History (2022) and Changing Childhoods in the Cape Colony (2015). Her current projects explore histories of menopause in the British Empire and the intersection of race and age in South African sex education. Duff has published widely in journals like Gender & History and Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth, and her writing appears in public platforms such as The Conversation and Africa is a Country.
Her research interests converge at the intersection of colonialism, gender, and bodily politics, with a focus on how age categories shaped power dynamics in colonial contexts. She has taught courses on African history, British Empire studies, and reproductive histories at institutions including the University of the Witwatersrand and Stellenbosch University.
