Sarah de Mendonça Virgi is Assistant Professor of European and Islamic Philosophy at Utrecht University. Her research explores medieval Arabic thought across natural philosophy, philosophy of mind, metaphysics, and theology.
Virgi's work examines concepts of spirit and soul in Islamic philosophical traditions, particularly through al-Ghazali and Fakhr al-Din al-Razi. She investigates connections between medieval Islamic philosophy and contemporary questions of ethics, biology, and human intelligence.
Her publications analyze animal cognition in Islamic encyclopedias, ethical frameworks of the soul, and comparative approaches to natural philosophy. Current projects explore medieval conceptions of nature and their intersections with moral philosophy.
Virgi serves as vice editor for IPM Monthly: Medieval Philosophy Today, making philosophical scholarship accessible beyond academia.
