Sarah Carter is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Humanities within the School of Social Sciences at Nottingham Trent University. She serves as Course Leader for the BA (Hons) English course and teaches across multiple levels, specializing in Renaissance and early modern literature.
Dr Carter's research centers on classical reception in early modern literature, with particular focus on Ovid, gender theory, and intertextuality. Her work explores:
- The reception of Ovidian mythology in contexts of sexual deviance
- Structuralist approaches to narrative systems
- Gender and sexuality in Renaissance texts
- Revenge tragedy and maternal narratives
- Folklore adaptation in early modern contexts
Dr Carter's publication history reveals consistent engagement with Ovidian reception across 15+ scholarly works since 2006, spanning monographs, journal articles, and reference entries. Her research trajectory evolved from sexual deviance studies (Ovidian Myth and Sexual Deviance, 2011) toward theoretical frameworks for intertextuality (2021), while maintaining focus on Shakespearean applications.
As an active academic, she serves as Reader for Early Modern Literary Studies and provides media commentary on Shakespeare, Renaissance witchcraft, and gender studies. Her current projects include twin representations in early modern literature and dyslexic student engagement with Spenser's The Faerie Queene.
