Sarah Carrier is a Professor in Science Education and Head of the Department of Teacher Education and Learning Sciences at North Carolina State University. She played a pivotal role in establishing NC State’s STEM-focused Elementary Education department, leading undergraduate and graduate program development while serving as Graduate Program Coordinator.
- Ph.D. and M.Ed. in Science Education (Environmental Education focus) from University of Florida
- B.S. in Elementary Education from University of Central Florida
Her research centers on environmental education, with emphasis on climate change instruction, nature-based learning environments, and elementary science teacher identity formation. She investigates how outdoor contexts enhance science knowledge, environmental attitudes, and student comfort in nature, while exploring intersections between literacy integration and science communication.
As co-Principal Investigator for NSF-funded projects like Supporting Elementary Teacher Learning for Effective School-Based Citizen Science and Accomplished Teachers of Mathematics and Science, she bridges formal/infomal science education frameworks. Her work appears in key journals including Frontiers in Education, International Journal of Science Education, and Environmental Researcher.
