Sarah Cameron is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of Maryland's College of Arts and Humanities. She specializes in Russian and Soviet history, with emphasis on Central Asia, environmental degradation, and state violence. Her Ph.D. in History was earned at Yale University.
Her research explores:
- Genocide and crimes against humanity in Soviet Kazakhstan
- Environmental history of the Aral Sea catastrophe
- Nomadic societies under Soviet collectivization
- Transnational impacts of cotton production
Her scholarly recognitions include:
- 4 major book prizes for The Hungry Steppe (2018)
- Andrew Carnegie Fellowship (2022-2024)
