Professor Sarah Brown is a leading expert in stained glass history, conservation, and medieval art. She serves as Course Director for the MA in Stained Glass Conservation and Heritage Management at the University of York’s Department of History of Art. Her roles include Director of the York Glaziers Trust and Chairman of the British committee of the Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi. Brown holds a BA from the University of London and an MA from the University of York, and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Historical Society.
Her research focuses on stained glass from the medieval period to the Gothic Revival, emphasizing technical analysis, restoration histories, and the intersection of art and craft. Key projects include the conservation of York Minster’s Great East Window and studies on medieval glazing techniques. She advises on international conservation initiatives and sits on numerous heritage committees, including the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institut Català de Recerca en Patrimoni Cultural.
Prof Brown’s teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with specialized courses in stained glass conservation theory and practice. She actively supervises PhD students researching topics such as heraldic glazing, stained glass trade networks, and restoration histories.
