Sarah Anderson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the College of William and Mary, part of the College of Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on bacterial stress responses, antibiotic resistance, and the molecular mechanisms of the stress signaling molecule ppGpp in Escherichia coli. She joined William and Mary in 2024 after completing a postdoctoral position at Washington University in St. Louis (2020–2024) and earlier work as an Emerging Infectious Diseases Training Fellow at the Wadsworth Center (2013–2014).
Anderson’s education includes a BS in Biology and BA in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2013) and a PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics from Emory University (2019). Her work integrates molecular biology, genetics, and systems biology to address fundamental questions in bacterial physiology and pathogenesis.
Her research interests center on understanding how bacteria adapt to environmental stresses, particularly through the ppGpp signaling pathway, which regulates growth, stress responses, and antibiotic resistance. This work has implications for combating antibiotic-resistant pathogens and improving therapeutic strategies.
Publications span topics like bacterial cell division, phenotypic heterogeneity in Acinetobacter baumannii, and antibiotic resistance mechanisms. Her studies contribute to the broader field of microbial pathogenesis and antimicrobial development.
