Dr. Sarah A. Tishkoff is the David and Lyn Silfen University Professor in Genetics and Biology at the University of Pennsylvania, holding dual appointments in the Perelman School of Medicine and the School of Arts and Sciences. She serves as Director of the Penn Center for Global Genomics & Health Equity, leading initiatives that bridge genomic research with health equity goals across diverse populations.
Dr. Tishkoff earned her Ph.D. in Genetics from Yale University in 1996 and has since established herself as a preeminent researcher in human evolutionary genomics. Her academic trajectory reflects a commitment to interdisciplinary scholarship, evidenced by her PIK (Penn Integrates Knowledge) endowed chair.
Dr. Tishkoff's research program centers on genomic and phenotypic variation in ethnically diverse African populations. Her integrative methodology combines extensive field work across Africa, advanced laboratory techniques, and sophisticated computational analyses to investigate African population history, the genetic architecture of anthropometric, cardiovascular, metabolic, and immune-related traits, and human adaptation to diverse environments and diets. She is a leading advocate for the inclusion of global populations in human genetics research, emphasizing how diversity in genomic studies is essential for scientific accuracy and health equity.
Analysis of Dr. Tishkoff's publication record reveals consistent focus on African genomic diversity with increasing emphasis on translational applications. Her recent work demonstrates sophisticated integration of multi-omics approaches to address critical gaps in population representation, with particular attention to skin pigmentation genetics, dietary adaptations, and infectious disease resistance mechanisms. This research trajectory highlights both scientific innovation and ethical commitment to inclusive genomics.
Dr. Tishkoff's scientific contributions have been recognized with numerous prestigious honors:
- Election to the National Academy of Sciences
- Election to the National Academy of Medicine
- Election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
- NIH Pioneer Award
- David and Lucile Packard Career Award
- Burroughs/Wellcome Fund Career Award
- ASHG Curt Stern Award
- Wilbur Cross Medal from Yale
- Vanderbilt Prize in biomedical sciences
As an educator and mentor, Dr. Tishkoff has trained numerous postdoctoral fellows and graduate students who now hold faculty positions at major research institutions worldwide. Her research program receives substantial support from the National Institutes of Health, the Chan Zuckerberg Institute, the American Diabetes Association, and the Pennsylvania Department of Health, enabling large-scale genomic investigations with significant scientific and health implications.
Dr. Tishkoff leads a dynamic research laboratory comprising research scientists, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers. The lab maintains active field sites across Africa and collaborates extensively with local researchers, creating a truly global research network focused on advancing genomic science while respecting community partnerships and ethical considerations.
