Sara Zewde is an Associate Professor in Practice of Landscape Architecture at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design (GSD). She is the founding principal of Studio Zewde, a firm specializing in landscape architecture, urbanism, and public art. Her work challenges traditional design precedents, emphasizing cultural sensitivity, ecology, and craft to expand design traditions.
Education: MLA from Harvard GSD, MCP from MIT, BA in Sociology and Statistics from Boston University.
Research focuses on decolonizing design practices, with projects such as the Dia Beacon Art Museum landscape and Watts Towers Arts Center. Currently writing a manuscript on Frederick Law Olmsted’s travels in the Slave South, to be published in 2027 by Simon & Schuster.
Awards include the National Olmsted Scholar (2014), Robert Rauschenberg Foundation Artist-in-Residence (2016), and United States Artists Fellow (2020). Recognized in 2024 TIME 100 Next and Wallpaper’s 300 People Shaping Creative America.
Teaches courses like Landscape Architecture II and Cotton Kingdom, Now at GSD. Former faculty at Columbia University and UT Austin.
