Sara Jensen is an Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Carthage College, where she returned in 2014. Her research focuses on finite group theory and character theory, while also innovating in mathematics education by integrating knitting into advanced math instruction. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison under Dr. Marty Isaacs, a leading expert in group theory, and holds a bachelor’s degree from Carthage College.
- Specializes in abstract algebra and topology
- Pioneered a calculator-free course using crafts to teach math
- Advocates for physical manipulatives to enhance mathematical learning
Research & Teaching Impact
Her work explores how tactile activities like knitting can demystify concepts in rubber sheet geometry and symmetry. Students engage with infinity scarves and knitted pillows to visualize topological principles and permutation symmetries. This unconventional approach aligns with studies showing physical interaction improves mathematical comprehension.Scientific Contributions
- Co-inventor on a breast cancer vaccine-related patent (indirectly mentioned via Andrea Henle’s work)
- Publications in The Conversation on mathematical pedagogy
Membership & Recognition
- Project NExT red dot ('15)
- Mathematical Association of America member
