Sara Houston is a Professor at the University of Surrey, affiliated with the Centre for Research in Arts and Creative Exchange (CREATX) within the School of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. She holds a PhD from the University of Roehampton in community dance and politics, alongside qualifications including BA (Hons), MA, PGCAP, and National Teaching Fellowship (NTF). Her work bridges dance, health, and community engagement, with a focus on Parkinson’s disease and dance, soft skills development in the arts, and socially engaged dance practices.
Key projects include leading the Empowering Dance: The Soft Skills Teaching and Learning Approach (2020–2023), funded by Erasmus+, and research for English National Ballet’s Dance for Parkinson’s program (2010–2015). She has held leadership roles such as Acting Deputy Head of Dance and Deputy Dean, and currently serves as Research and Knowledge Exchange Director at CREATX. Awards include the BUPA Foundation Prize (2011) and National Teaching Fellowship (2014).
Her consultancy work spans international collaborations, including Hong Kong’s Dance Well program and the Surrey Forensic Psychology Unit’s Dancing Inside project with Motionhouse Dance Theatre. Houston is a sought-after keynote speaker, addressing dance’s role in healthcare, education, and community development through media, conferences, and workshops.
