Sara Gibbeson is a Lecturer in Illustration and Design at the University of Sunderland, affiliated with the School of Creative Arts and Department of Illustration and Design. She teaches on the BA (Hons) Illustration and Design programme, focusing on student development of creative voices through experimentation with mediums like dip pen, oil paint, watercolor, and digital tools (Adobe Photoshop). She holds an MA in Illustration and Design from the University of Sunderland and maintains a freelance practice creating work for public art, children’s books, live events, and educational materials.
Her research interests include participatory drawing and the intersection of traditional craftsmanship with digital innovation. She emphasizes sketchbook-based observational practices as foundational to her creative process, blending analog techniques with digital layering to create textured illustrations. Her work explores themes of environmental storytelling and self-expression through visual narratives.
Gibbeson advocates for illustration as an accessible medium for communication and storytelling, regularly collaborating with industry clients while balancing academic responsibilities. She contributes to curriculum development in the BA programme and supports student projects across all year groups.
