Dr. Sara Cordeiro serves as Senior Lecturer in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Leicester School of Pharmacy, De Montfort University, within the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. She leads an independent research group under the Leicester Institute of Pharmaceutical Innovation for Integrated Care (LIPIIC), focusing on non-invasive, scalable drug and vaccine delivery systems to improve patient outcomes through innovative pharmaceutical technologies.
Her academic foundation includes:
- PharmD from the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (Portugal), 2010
- PhD in Drug Research and Development from the School of Pharmacy, University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain), 2017
- PGCert in Higher Education and Teaching from Queen's University Belfast (UK), 2020
Cordeiro's research program strategically addresses three critical pharmaceutical challenges: (1) engineering functional biomaterials for precision drug/vaccine delivery and diagnostics; (2) creating advanced systems for biologics, injectables, and poorly soluble compounds; and (3) implementing 3D printing and microfluidics to transform pharmaceutical manufacturing. Her work emphasizes patient-centric solutions with industrial scalability while maintaining therapeutic efficacy through non-invasive administration routes.
Her publication record demonstrates significant contributions to microneedle technology and advanced manufacturing, particularly in translating nanocarrier research into clinically viable delivery platforms. These works consistently bridge pharmaceutical sciences with cutting-edge engineering disciplines to solve persistent drug delivery challenges.
Her distinguished recognition includes:
- Controlled Release Society Exceptional Leadership Award (2024)
- AAPS Pharmaceutical Research Meritorious Manuscript Award for microneedle innovation (2022)
- Queen's University Belfast Postdoc Showcase First Prize (2019)
- School of Pharmacy Staff Recognition Award (STAR) for leadership and mentorship (2019)
- Best Presentation at SPLC-CRS Young Scientist Meeting (2017)
Dr. Cordeiro actively mentors the next generation of pharmaceutical scientists while securing competitive research funding through strategic grant acquisition:
- External Funding: Wellcome Trust Biomedical Vacation Scholarship (2019), PARSUK Xperience 2021
- Internal Funding: DMU Lifelong Wellbeing Seed Funding (2023), DMU Doctoral College PhD studentships (2023), Gunn & Carter research studentship (2022)
She maintains leadership roles in professional organizations including the Controlled Release Society (CRS) Board, Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences (APS), and serves as eMedia Lead for CRS Women in Science, driving innovation and diversity in pharmaceutical research communities.
