Sara Cherry is a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania, affiliated with the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and multiple graduate groups including Cell and Molecular Biology, Pharmacology, Immunology, Genomics and Computational Biology, and Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics. Her research focuses on genetic and mechanistic studies of viral-host interactions, particularly emerging RNA viruses like coronaviruses and arthropod-borne viruses (flaviviruses, alphaviruses, bunyaviruses). She employs chemical and genetic screening technologies to investigate antiviral defense mechanisms in human and insect cells, with recent emphasis on SARS-CoV-2 and precision oncology applications.

Her work explores RNA binding proteins, RNA decay machinery, and cell-type specific immune pathways in antiviral defense. The lab also investigates Drosophila models of intestinal arboviral infections and microbiota interactions. In precision medicine, they collaborate with UPENN's high-throughput screening core to develop tumor cell sensitivity assays for personalized chemotherapy in acute myeloid leukemia.
Recent publications highlight SARS-CoV-2 reservoirs in long COVID, STING signaling mechanisms, mitophagy interactions, and comparative flavivirus-host proteomics. The Cherry Lab maintains a multidisciplinary team including graduate students, postdocs, and research specialists across virology, immunology, and oncology projects.
