Santiago Hidalgo is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Montreal's Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Art History, Cinema, and Audiovisual Media. He directs the Laboratoire CinéMédias and co-leads the Cinema and Technology book series at Amsterdam University Press. His research focuses on film consciousness, children’s film reception, and media accessibility, with projects funded by major grants such as the Canada Research Chairs program and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
He holds a PhD from the University of Montreal (2016), titled The Possibilities of ‘Film Consciousness’: A Formulation in Search of a Theory, and has authored/co-authored works including Technology and Film Scholarship (2018). His interdisciplinary initiatives include the cinEXmedia partnership on screen-age well-being and the Intersectorial Rhythm Meetings at UdeM.
Key grants include a $5M SSHRC partnership grant (2022–2030), projects on ASMR and cinema therapy (2024–2029), and studies on cinematic experiences for long-term care residents (2022–2026). He collaborates widely with institutions and researchers across film studies, neuroscience, and geriatrics.
