Sanna Kopra is a Research Professor at the Arctic Centre, University of Lapland, and holds a Docent title from the University of Turku. She is a Senior Fellow at the Arctic Institute and actively involved in UArctic Thematic Networks on Critical Arctic Studies, Geopolitics/Security, and Arctic Law. Her research focuses on international political science, with particular emphasis on China's Arctic strategy, climate responsibility, and great power dynamics in the Arctic region.
Education: Docent (Adjunct Professor) in International Relations at the University of Turku. Key roles include Principal Investigator for major projects such as Planetocene2050: Rethinking International Relations in an Era of the Planetocene (2023–2027) and TRANSNATURE: Transboundary Governance Models of Biodiversity Protection (2023–2026).
Research interests span Arctic geopolitics, climate policy, and the interplay between great power rivalry and environmental governance. She has published extensively on China's role in Arctic regionalization, climate justice, and the implications of geopolitical shifts in the region. Awards include the 2018 Best Paper Award from the English School section of the International Studies Association.
Recent projects emphasize planetary approaches to Arctic politics, biodiversity protection, and normative frameworks for climate responsibility. Her work bridges theoretical international relations with applied Arctic governance, often collaborating with institutions like the Nordic Council of Ministers and EU bodies.
Awards: 2018 ISA English School Best Paper Award. Projects include over €2M in funding for initiatives addressing Arctic security, climate leadership, and transboundary resource management.
