Sanjeev Gupta is a Professor of Earth Science at Imperial College London, affiliated with the Department of Earth Science & Engineering under the Faculty of Engineering. His research focuses on Geology, Astronomical and Space Sciences, and Sedimentology, with notable contributions to understanding Martian geology and the dynamics of ancient river systems influencing civilizations like the Indus. He leads projects using advanced remote sensing, isotopic dating, and field studies. His work includes groundbreaking studies on the Ghaggar-Hakra palaeochannel and Martian lake deposits.
Key affiliations include the Space Lab, Impacts and Astromaterials Research Centre, and Dynamic Earth initiatives. His research integrates geophysical methods like OSL dating and zircon provenance analysis, as demonstrated in his 2017 Nature Communications paper on Indus settlements and 2015 Science study on Martian paleolakes. Collaborators include experts in sedimentology, geochronology, and planetary science.
He has been featured in BBC Radio documentaries and co-authored widely cited articles. His future work continues to explore river geomorphology’s role in human settlements and extraterrestrial geology.
