Sandro Échaquan is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Nursing Sciences, while maintaining clinical practice. A member of the Atikamekw Nehirowisiwde Nation of Manawan, he is Quebec’s first Indigenous-descendant specialized front-line nurse practitioner (IPSPL) and co-founder of the Centre Mihawoso – Centre de pédiatrie sociale de Manawan, the first social pediatrics center in an Indigenous community. His work focuses on integrating Indigenous ancestral knowledge with modern healthcare systems to promote equity and cultural safety.
- Education: Bachelor’s in Nursing (Université de Moncton), Master’s at UdeM (while serving as Graduate Student Association president), NPPL specialization at University of Ottawa
- Leadership: Directed Masko-Siwin Health Services (2014–2017), later co-founded Centre Mihawoso (2019)
- Advocacy: Spearheaded cultural safety initiatives after his cousin Joyce Échaquan’s 2020 death, contributing to the Joyce Principle advocacy framework
His research emphasizes healing through the medicine wheel framework (spiritual, mental, physical, emotional integration) and addressing social determinants of health in Indigenous communities. He teaches at UdeM and trains leaders at HEC Montréal’s First Nations Leadership School, emphasizing ethical healthcare practices that respect Indigenous worldviews.
