Sandrine Gerber

Dr. Sandrine Gerber is an Adjunct Professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in the School of Basic Sciences and Deputy Director of the Institute of Chemical Sciences and Engineering. She leads research in biomaterials engineering and nanomedicine, with particular focus on functionalized polymers for therapeutic applications. Her laboratory develops alginate-based hydrogels for cell transplantation and functionalized nanoparticles for targeted drug/gene delivery.

Research domains include:

• Design of polysaccharide-based hydrogels for islet/hepatocyte transplantation
• Surface modification of harmonic nanoparticles for cancer theranostics
• Chitosan copolymers for gene delivery in metabolic diseases
• Functional biomaterials for tissue engineering scaffolds

Her publication portfolio demonstrates strong emphasis on nanomaterial functionalization strategies, with recent work focusing on biosensor interfaces, lithium niobate nanoparticles for imaging, and COVID-19 therapeutic formulations. She serves on committees for the Doctoral Program in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and contributes to EPFL's educational programs in organic chemistry.

Scientific honors include the Werner Prize (2010) and Excellence in Teaching Award (2018). She has supervised 15+ PhD candidates and numerous master's students in biomaterials and synthetic chemistry.
