Sandrijn Van Schaik is Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) with a clinical appointment in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. She serves as the Director of Faculty Development in the UCSF School of Medicine Center for Faculty Educators and the Vice-Chair for Education in the Department of Pediatrics. As the inaugural Baum Family Presidential Chair for Experiential Learning, Dr. van Schaik has established herself as a leader in medical education with numerous recognitions including selection to the National Academy for Distinguished Educators in Pediatrics.
Dr. van Schaik completed her medical degree at the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, followed by a PhD studying Respiratory Syncytial Virus pathogenesis at the University of Utrecht. Her clinical training includes pediatric residency at Tufts University's Floating Hospital for Children and Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship at UCSF. She further enhanced her expertise through the UCSF Teaching Scholar Program and a 2-year Medical Education Research Fellowship.
Her research focuses on interprofessional collaboration and simulation-based training, with particular emphasis on improving clinical learning environments and faculty development. Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong trajectory in developing innovative assessment tools for medical education, exploring power dynamics in debriefing sessions, and addressing equity issues in healthcare training environments. Her work consistently bridges educational theory with practical clinical applications.
Dr. van Schaik has received numerous prestigious awards including the Cooke Award for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (2022) and the Academy of Medical Educators Excellence in Mentoring Award (2024). Her research has been supported by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation and NIH, where she serves as Principal Investigator on projects developing scorecards for clinical learning environments and novel debriefing strategies for interprofessional team training.
As a dedicated mentor, she works with faculty on career development and research projects, emphasizing curriculum design and qualitative research methods. She leads the UCSF Kanbar Simulation Center initiatives focused on developing 'Medical Educators of the 21st Century' and has been instrumental in advancing pediatric critical care fellowship training programs.
