Sandra Wood is an Assistant Professor of Linguistics at the University of Southern Maine (USM), based in the Department of Linguistics within the College of Science, Technology, and Health. She holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Connecticut (2013), and MA degrees in Linguistics from the University of Connecticut (2009) and Purdue University (2000). Her research focuses on syntactic structure of American Sign Language (ASL), comparative syntax across spoken and signed languages, and acquisition of signed languages as first/second languages, including homesigned systems.
Prior to USM, she taught at McDaniel College (ASL/Deaf Education) and the University of Virginia (Psychology/ASL Program). She serves on editorial boards for Formal and Experimental Advances in Sign Language Theory and Sign Languages and Deaf Communities (SLDC), reviews for Lingua and signed languages conferences, and has held roles in multicultural education initiatives (e.g., Carroll County Public Schools committee, 2015–2017).
Her publications include contributions to the Deaf Studies Encyclopedia (2016) and an upcoming monograph on sign language structure. Her work bridges theoretical linguistics and applied research in deaf education.
