Dr. Sandra Tillema is an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen's Faculty of Economics and Business, within the Department of Accounting and Auditing — Management. She serves as Academic Director of Career Services and Corporate Relations and is a Steering Committee member of the Centre for Public Health in Economics and Business. Her research focuses on management control systems, public sector partnerships, risk management in banking, and lean manufacturing. Tillema holds a PhD from the University of Groningen and has been affiliated with the faculty since 1996.
Her research explores topics such as management accountants' role identity in banking risk management, personality traits influencing job crafting, control mechanisms during organizational transformation, and misconduct in financial sectors. She has published extensively on public sector auditing, performance measurement, and lean production challenges in multidivisional firms.
Tillema teaches courses like Asset Pricing and Financial Management, supervising master's theses in Management Accounting and Control, Controlling, and Health programs. Her work bridges academic research with practical applications in corporate and public sector governance.
Her teaching and research emphasize interdisciplinary approaches, combining accounting principles with organizational behavior and strategic management. Current projects include studying the implications of internationalization on audit teams and disruptive strategic changes in firms.
