Sandra Shumway is a Research Professor of Marine Sciences at the University of Connecticut's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She specializes in marine invertebrate physiology, shellfish biology, and the impacts of harmful algal blooms on aquaculture. She holds a B.S. from Southampton College, and a Ph.D. and D.Sc. from the University College of North Wales. Her research explores topics such as bivalve feeding strategies, microplastic interactions, and biofouling management.
Dr. Shumway has authored over 160 publications and edited major journals like Journal of Shellfish Research and Harmful Algae. Her honors include the Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellowship and AAAS Fellowship. Current projects address harmful algae mitigation, microplastic effects on shellfish, and carbon sequestration in marine systems.
Her advising includes Ph.D. student Eric Heupel and alumni such as Hélène Hegaret. Research funding includes an EPA grant for harmful algal bloom studies. She advocates for sustainable aquaculture practices and collaborates on coastal resilience projects through UConn's Connecticut Institute for Resilience & Climate Adaptation (CIRCA).
