Professor Sandra Savocchia is a Professor in Vine Pathology and Sub-Dean, Graduate Studies in the Faculty of Science and Health at Charles Sturt University. She holds a BAgSci(Hons) and PhD from the University of Adelaide, specializing in fungicide resistance and viticultural plant pathology. Her research focuses on plant disease epidemiology, molecular diagnostics, and management strategies for grapevine, walnut, and persimmon dieback. She has supervised numerous Honours and Higher Degree by Research students and actively engages in national projects on grapevine wood diseases.
Education: BAgSci(Hons) from University of Adelaide (1997), PhD in Plant Pathology (2002).
Research Interests: Fungal plant pathology, plant disease management, genetic diversity of pathogens, plant biosecurity, and fungicide resistance. Her work emphasizes molecular tools for rapid diagnostics and improving disease management strategies.
Key Research Contributions: Studies on grapevine trunk diseases, persimmon and walnut dieback, and pathogen spore dispersal patterns. Collaborates internationally and leads projects funded by ARC, Wine Australia, and industry partners.
Awards: Australian Women in Wine Awards (2018), CSU Academic Excellence Awards (2004, 2008, 2010). Active in organizing conferences and workshops, including the 12th International Workshop on Grapevine Trunk Diseases (2022).
Labs/Teams: Leads research on grapevine and walnut disease management, with a focus on sustainable agricultural practices aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goals for education and sustainable agriculture.
