Sandra Ciesek

Prof. Dr. Sandra Ciesek is a faculty member at Goethe University Frankfurt, serving as Coordinator of the Bridging Topic "Diagnostics" within hepatitis research. Her work focuses on identifying unknown viral etiologies in acute hepatitis cases where standard diagnostics fail.

Her primary research interests include:

• Viral hepatitis of unknown origin (Hep-X)
• Diagnostic development for elusive hepatitis pathogens
• Virology of acute hepatitis without established causes
• Pathogenesis of hepatitis with viral histologic evidence but unidentified agents

Prof. Ciesek leads diagnostic initiatives across Germany's major research hubs including Hamburg, Lübeck, Borstel, Riems, Hannover, Braunschweig, Heidelberg, and Munich. Her work addresses the 10-20% of acute hepatitis cases with no identifiable cause despite evidence of viral involvement, aiming to close critical gaps in hepatitis diagnostics and etiology identification.
